Gait Analysis at the Kambeitz Chiropractic Gym

Runner silhouetteWe’re excited to announce a new service at our gym.  Gait Analysis.

At Kambeitz Chiropractic Health and Wellness Center P.C. gait analysis is more than just picking out the right pair of running shoes.  Troy Bacon, personal trainer has specialized in gait analysis, with results benefiting beginner to expert athletes.  Using a high-speed camera and tracking software, the strengths and weaknesses of your running and walking technique are evaluated.

At our clinic Gait Analysis consists on two sessions.  The first session, you will be recorded on the treadmill to analyze your running (or walking) form. Between sessions your video will be analyzed, identifying the greatest weaknesses that can be improved upon. The second session, your trainer will discuss the results of your gait analysis, teaching you the exercises, stretches and drills to improve your gait and performance, one step at a time. To learn more about our gait analysis service, download our Gait Analysis Flyer.

Want to learn more about gait analysis, and learn how you can benefit for this new service?  We had Troy Bacon, our personal trainer and gait expert, answer a few of the most common questions he is asked about gait analysis.  Have questions, please share them with us!

What is your background with running and athletics?

I have always from a young age been involved in athletics – baseball, basketball, football, etcetera.  In college I competed in Division 1 Track and Field for the University of Northern Iowa as a decathlete. In that time I also earned my degrees in Exercise Science and Sport Psychology.

Where did you learn about gait analysis?

The first I heard about gait analysis was in college.  I worked for a store called The Runner’s Flat that did a basic form to determine appropriate shoe-style for customers.  Our version is more in-depth and designed to help runners increase their efficiency and avoid injury.

Describe what you are looking for when analyzing a patient on the treadmill?

The key points that I will be looking for on each patient are level of pronation in the ankles – this helps determine correct shoes, dorsi-flexion – if the toe is being pulled up each stride, knee drive, foot-strike, and tempo.  Every person is different so it is possible and likely that other points will be discussed specific to the individual.

If my gait is less than perfect, what recommendations will you have for me?
(different running shoes, different footwear for work/home, orthotics, massage, chiropractic…???)

These are all great in helping with proper gait.  I will prescribe a set of exercises, stretches and drills for each person – again, specific to their needs.  These will be basic movements that can be done at home, work, etc.  In some cases I may recommend that they spend some time with me in training to correct whatever problems they may have.

How can recognizing and treating my running gait prevent injuries?

There are a number of ways it can help prevent injuries.  The first of which is having correct footwear.  Also, improper form can create muscle imbalances which may lead to a pulled or strained muscle.  Lastly, tempo (steps per minute) and foot-strike play a role in how your energy is being spent – is every stride sending a shock up the leg OR is it efficiently propelling you forward?

How will having my gait analyzed and corrections made to my stride help me achieve more in the 8WW program?

Great question!  The 8WW program is designed to help you create and maintain a healthy lifestyle well beyond your eight weeks with us.  Having the knowledge and confidence that you are working efficiently in your outside workouts is going to help these healthy habits last.

Is gait analysis only for runners?

Everybody who walks will benefit from it, especially those who spend a lot of time on their feet.  Many of us have jobs that require spending hours on end up and moving around.  Having proper footwear or orthotics plays a HUGE role in ensuring this can be done comfortably.
